Colin Brown - Founded in 1842 as the National Institute for Preservation of Life, the RNLI is a charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. King George IV became a patron and royal patronage remains to this day. Based in Poole, it operates from 238 lifeboat stations with 400 lifeboats. The RNLI relies primarily on voluntary donations and has saved over 144,000 lives since its foundation.
